Death's smell perched

with the perch of vultures

on the oiled wings of air.

The odour of death's stinking head

hung on the long barrel

of painted steel

tearing trough the thick clouds

of darkness

like the slash of new razor

through cocoyarn leaves.

Lagos, August, 1998
